It’s called sagging or low riding. You’ve seen it, it’s out there and it’s making a statement. The young male generation who wears their pants at the hips and fashionably shows off their underwear from plaids, to whites, to reds. Is there a meaning behind this style that some call rude and others call sexy?
It all began in the US prison system. Uniforms issued to inmates were usually a few sizes too large and belts are prohibited in prison to prevent violence and suicide. This created the sagging pants below the waist to the hip. But who cared they were all males in a jail system. The style was later popularized by hip-hop artists in the 1990’s. Also gang members were known to wear baggie loose pants in an effort to conceal weapons. Something that began as an objectionable fashion trend moved onto to become an illegal action; which can put some in jail; which ironically is where it all started. There is much controversy on this subject.
For centuries now women have been objectified and pressured to show their cleavage and wear the mini skirt. This is the cosmo woman of today. So why can’t men have this liberation as well? I believe that men are wanting to get more in touch with their vulnerable spiritual nature and feel that this low riding look is as liberated as a man can get with his body image in public. Some feel that there is a homosexual move behind it all and that they are asking for that in this way. Yes a certain percentage fall in that bracket. But for the most part, it is a fashion and these young dudes are hanging with the hottest babes who are just as naked as they. Women also wear low rise jeans to reveal their G-string which is known as (“the whale tail”). But this is socially acceptable. So you figure! Is it more dangerous for a man to be semi nude and not a woman? If a woman is sexually dressed and gets raped, they say she asked for it because of the way she dressed. If a man is showing his cleavage or gluteal cleft ( crack) then he is asking for something or projecting something else. They don’t have breasts to do that so their cleavage is the gluteal cleft. I am noticing that there are different levels of this trend. Some wear them real low below the hip and at the knee and then others way at the top closer to the waist but manage to get some underwear out to shine. And lately I have seen the no underwear look with the jeans sagging. I have seen it below the hips whereby the penis is actually projected in the underwear. I have noticed corporate men with their whites pulled up to the waist and the pants were there as well. It may be a comfort thing for men to pull the underwear way up high. Women show nipples and project their breasts consistently out there and wear short dresses that look like just a shirt. But this is the male pressure in our society that cause women to do this. Since a man cannot project his penis because that would be dangerous to the world he has found a way for a happy medium. Yes I believe men are competing with women on this level for freedom, power and feminine energy. Clothing is binding and to get in touch with that primal being and chi energies one must exhibit some form of bodily freedom. Being half dressed is more creative and opens the senses.
There is a time and a place for this and a certain containment should be honored with this fashion. It is not a fashion of the corporate world just like tattoos aren’t. For example I wouldn’t go to grandmas with my breast out and so men should be considerate in the same way. So like I said there is a time and a place for it and one should consider this when approaching the world with their statement. I must say it sometimes looks uncomfortable in watching them have to pull their pants up after every few steps or so. But they are getting it together and I am down with this. I wonder why a designer hasn’t yet stepped in to create some fashion with this whole trend like they do with everything else. For example the Madonna cone shaped bras. I also think that if they are going to wear it below the hip they should then begin wearing bathing suit trunks which would then be more acceptable or maybe not. Bathing suit trunks are a little tight fitted, well at least the boxer shorts are baggy.
Sagging has been called an “immoral expression” but (excuse my French here) “tits” hanging out all over the place aren’t? Hmmm, makes me wonder. Any form of nudity is really a fluid creative artistic expression of the senses. What can I say nudity on all levels has always been in? And especially the “man made” breasts that women pay lots of money for; well of course they need to be showed off and not just in the bedroom. I personally like the sagging pant look on men who have a shapely buttock. I don’t think it looks as good on men who have flat muscles there. Maybe it’s time for men to consider that cosmetic buttock lift as women do with breasts. Now that would be taking it to a whole other level. I feel a sense of liberation in just watching the men this way. Its good on the eyes like men say breasts with cleavage is good on the eyes as well. So I feel a different liberation, like men have had for years and now women have this. Far thinking on this but it is what us women have been doing for years for the male and now they are giving back. I feel free and relieved. I would like to see more corporate men try this on; of course on their off time. This is a way to let go and let your hair down, let down the stress, be free and create that happy balance between the rigid corporate world and the happy world. Loose clothing is more freeing and increases ones libido. Ok guys you can put away the Viagra, this trend will take you back where you once were. It’s like going to a nudist camp but in society. Not quite the same but the affect is there.
